The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday announced a Pongal gift hamper, comprising one kg of raw rice, one kg of sugar and a full-length sugar cane, for rice card-holders and Sri Lankan Tamil families residing in rehabilitation camps.
A government order to this effect has been issued. The decision will benefit over 2.20 crore rice card-holders and Sri Lankan Tamil families. The government would incur an expenditure of ₹249.76 crore, a release said.
Additionally, dhotis and saris have been kept ready. Measures have been taken to distribute them for free, along with the hamper, the release added.
