Imphal: The Manipur government on Thursday announced that schools and colleges in the Imphal Valley districts and Jiribam will reopen from November 28 after a 13-day closure, as reported by news agency PTI.
Educational institutions in these areas were shut down on November 16 following the recovery of the bodies of three women and three children from the Jiri and Barak rivers in Manipur and Assam, respectively.
An order from the Directorate of Education (Schools) stated, “Normal classes will resume for all schools in the state, including government, government-aided, private, and central schools, from November 29.” A separate order confirmed that government and government-aided colleges under the Higher and Technical Education Department, along with state universities, will resume classes on Friday.
The violence in Manipur escalated after three women and three children from the Meitei community went missing from a relief camp in Jiribam following a gunfight on November 11 between security forces and suspected Kuki-Zo militants, which resulted in the deaths of 10 insurgents. The six missing individuals were later found dead.
Prohibitory orders remained in place in the Imphal Valley districts and Jiribam until Thursday, according to an official.
“It is unclear whether the curfew will be relaxed from Friday or continue, as no new order has been issued,” the official added.
Since May last year, ethnic violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hill-based Kuki-Zo groups has claimed over 250 lives and left thousands homeless.
