The West Bengal police saw major reshuffle on Wednesday (December 4, 2024) in the top brass after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly expressed her displeasure with certain sections of government officials, including police officers.
Four officers of the CID top brass were reallocated to new roles. Ms. Damayanti Sen has been made the new Additional Director General and Inspector-General of Police of Policy, West Bengal. R. Shivakumar who was in the post Ms. Sen has been posted to. Mr. Shivakumar will now be the ADG and IGP of the Enforcement Branch, West Bengal.
Two other officers, Rajeev Mishra and R. Rajasekaran of the West Bengal police were also shifted to new positions.
Previous transfers
Pranav Kumar, Inspector General of Police, Barrackpore district, was made Additional Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. Murli Dhar, the previous Additional Commissioner of Police, was shifted to Mr. Kumar’s position on November 20. Mr. Dhar had served in the Kolkata Police for over a decade.
Four other top officers were shifted to new positions, including Swati Bhangalia, Biswajit Mahato, Subimal Paul, and Surinder Singh.
Mamata slams officials
On November 21, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on a certain section of the police for inaction and corruption. This came after multiple Trinamool Congress leaders from Ms. Banerjee’s own party raised questions about the police and their workings in the State.
At a public meeting Ms. Banerjee voiced her concerns and said, “Lower-level officers, workers, and some police officers take bribes in smuggling sand, coal, and cement theft.”
She wondered why she and other political leaders have to shoulder the blame for corruption among certain sections of police and office workers.
