Maha questions from opposition’s small allies

In the past few years, Maharashtra’s political landscape has been marked by alliances that seemed improbable. Analysis focused on MVA, where Shiv Sena (later only the Uddhav Thackeray wing) aligned with Congress and Sharad Pawar’s NCP. A less discussed development is the emergence of collaboration between grassroots organisations (GOs) and MVA parties.

Grassroots power | Across Maharashtra, several GOs and social movement fronts have adopted electoral mobilisation – such as Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, Maharashtra Democratic Front, Hum Bharat Ke Log, Lok Morcha, Salokha Samiti, and Progressive Republic Front – and begun collaborating with MVA parties. An illustration of why this move towards electoral politics is surprising is captured in the words of the head of an organisation in Nandurbar – “I sat on an indefinite fast against the Congress MLA back in 2012. And now I am preparing to campaign for him.”
