Independent game developer Masala Games has announced the upcoming release of its light-hearted Indian mystery-adventure game, Detective Dotson, on Xbox Series consoles. Set in a stylised 2D-meets-3D version of modern-day India, the game follows Dotson, an aspiring Bollywood star turned reluctant detective. Detective Dotson is the brainchild of Shalin Shodhan, a former EA alum (Spore) and Oscar-winning Pixar artist (Toy Story 3, Brave).

The Founder and CEO of Masala Games, Shalin Shodhan, said, “It’s the dream of every game developer to bring their game to console as it’s perceived to have the highest quality bar to clear. We’re thankful that the Xbox Developer Acceleration Program believes in us. It’s not every day that one of the leading platforms in gaming takes notice. Their trust motivates us to do this opportunity justice.”

Detective Dotson: Plot

Detective Dotson draws inspiration from modern Indian pop culture, including Bollywood and crime dramas like CID, while featuring a unique narrative and aesthetic style developed from scratch and based on real-world Indian cities.

As you collect clues and solve mysteries, you’ll encounter a colourful cast of characters, each harbouring their own secrets.

Developed in Unity, Detective Dotson offers a rich gaming experience with a single-player episodic story and 2-player couch co-op levels. The game also features an original and authentic soundtrack, created in collaboration with Nikhil Rao of Indian Ocean, a renowned pioneer of Indian rock in the subcontinent.

India Lead, Global Expansion at Xbox, Arjun Varma, said, “We’re excited and proud to see our desi and Bollywood-inspired Detective Dotson release on Xbox Series consoles. Xbox wants to bring unique and diverse games from India to a global audience via our ID@Xbox Program. We are grateful to have Masala Games as an awesome partner on this journey.”
